Vincent Van Gogh vases: 1st grade

Where has the time gone!  I am in total denial that the month of October is rapidly coming to a close.  November is looming out there- like this big scary monster that is taunting me; "I'm coming... be ready...I'm coming for you."  Scary right?  Well if you are like me and feeling swamped, yes it's scary.  I have my artist picked for November, but that's about it.  I had almost forgotten how this panicky feeling can creep up on you.  Anyway- time to share what we have been SO busy doing!!

October we took a look at Vincent van Gogh.  His paintings were the inspiration for our Art to Remember fundraiser this year.  If you are not familiar with the name, Art to Remember is an art fundraiser where parents can purchase mugs, shirts, and other goodies that display their child's art.  Here's the link for their website if you want to check them out: http://www.arttoremember.com/

The first graders took a look at Vincent's famous Sunflower paintings to create these beautys.  I originally saw this lesson here: http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/02/06/van-gogh-flowers-art-lesson/  When I taught my first graders the lesson, I taught them three things to get themselves started:  Include a "3-smile" vase (total of 3 curved lines: top, middle and bottom), a horizon line behind the vase, and how to show overlapping with their flowers.  We colored them in with cray-pas and outlined with black cray-pas.  Very cute results!

  1. I like how some of your students signed their names on the vases, like Van Gogh did on his sunflower paintings. Very observant kids :).
